Benefits of Workplace Mindfulness

Over recent years organisations have become increasingly concerned about the resilience and wellbeing of employees. Stress and mental ill-health are the most common causes of absenteeism, presenteeism and staff turnover, and account for 70 million sick days per year, which is more than half of the total every year. The cost of this to organisations is phenomenal, with there being an estimated cost of £100 billion to the British economy. Unfortunately, with the current pandemic it is likely that the problem will be exacerbated.

As a result organisations have become interested in the benefits of workplace-based mindfulness, and many have introduced it into their workplaces to enhance employee wellbeing, improve job satisfaction and performance. Some of these include leading organisations such as;

Google, Apple, Yahoo, KPMG, Transport for London, NHS and Government departments.

Transport for London employees who attended a mindfulness program; days off due to stress, anxiety and depression fell by 70%, and absences for all health conditions by 50%.

In 2015 the Mindfulness All-Party Parliamentary Group (MAPPG) published the Mindful Nation UK report, which concluded that mindfulness is a promising innovation in the workplace context with multiple potential benefits to organisations. Evidence states the benefits of workplace mindfulness include the following:

  • Improves employee wellbeing and resilience

  • Greater employee job satisfaction and performance

  • Increases focus and concentration

  • Improves collaboration with colleagues

  • Enhances leadership and decision-making processes

  • Enables the development of flexible thinking and innovation
